Publisher of books of high literary merit and fresh artistic vision.
Mid-List Press publishes fiction, nonfiction, and poetry books of high literary merit and fresh artistic vision by new and emerging writers and by writers ignored, marginalized, or excluded from publication by commercial publishers. Mid-List Press seeks to increase access to publication for new writers, nurture the growth of emerging writers, and increase the diversity of books, authors, and readers. Mid-List Press is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit literary organization.
Mid-List Press was founded in 1989 by a group of writers and editors who believed strongly that there was a need for an independent book publisher dedicated to the survival of the “midlist” — those quality titles of general interest that are rarely bestsellers, but, in the words of noted media critic Ben H. Bagdikian, “nonetheless account for most lasting works in both fiction and nonfiction.” In the past, publishers built their reputations on midlist books. In recent years, however, such factors as the enormous prices paid for high-profile “frontlist” books and the growing domination of mass merchandisers have eaten away at the traditional support for the midlist. The most disturbing aspect of this decline has been a corresponding decline in writers’ access to publication and, hence, to their audiences. Mid-List Press strives to offer a public voice to those people and ideas silenced by the current state of the American book publishing.
Mid-List Press pursues its mission by publishing books by first-time and emerging writers, as well as books that commercial publishers have taken out of print or rejected for reasons of profitability. Mid-List Press also organizes readings, workshops, and other events, and partners with other arts, educational, and public service organizations to promote literacy and literature.
